We’ve talked about Shia’s past with FKA Twigs on this channel before, but we haven’t really dug into his relationship with Mia Goth and how she’s been a part of this too. Reports say that Shia and Mia’s relationship has been a wild ride, with ups and downs, public breakups, and even navigating parenthood together. It’s especially scary when there’s a child involved. So, let’s dive into how this all began.
Their relationship is a quintessential Hollywood story. They met back in 2012 while filming “Nymphomaniac,” a movie I hadn’t heard of until now. This was Mia’s first acting role, and it seemed almost inevitable that she and Shia would connect. Shia once told GQ in 2008 that he’s fallen in love with every woman he’s worked with, which is exactly why I’d never date an actor. They disappear for months to shoot a film and return as different people, sometimes cheating and moving on. Those romantic movies require a level of method acting that blurs the lines between acting and real feelings. For example, Ariana Grande seemed to come out of filming “Wicked” as a completely different person.
In 2013, Mia appeared in a music video directed by Shia for the song “Haunted Love” by Future Unlimited. The video is quite unsettling, with Mia crying and giving birth in a bathtub. Shia described the video to The Hollywood Reporter, saying, “When I think domestic, I feel love. Fast forward to 2015, and rumors about Mia and Shia being engaged started swirling after Mia was seen wearing an engagement ring at Fashion Week. A source told People, “They seem very happy and spend a lot of time together. Shia is a big goof, and Mia is the same way. This is every celebrity’s worst nightmare. In the video, Shia says, “I don’t want to touch you. I don’t want to be aggressive. This is the kind of stuff that makes a person abusive,” which is disturbing given his past incidents of getting physical with women. It’s beyond me how someone can become violent with someone they claim to love. It’s just not okay.

What did he say? “He’s going to kill her?” You think I need to double-fist it? Wow. He said, “I was going to kill her.” So, he’s in Germany. Are these random German guys helping him out, helping him escape this Mia situation? It looked like he wanted his bag; these guys intervened, and then he got into a car with them. The entire time, someone was filming. I don’t know if it was a body cam or just fans. It didn’t sound like legal officers. But the fact that he said that… I don’t know. I don’t know why he would be so aggressive like that. I mean, he said she was pushing him. I don’t know if he meant physically or just pushing him emotionally to do something like this. But the way he’s speaking, it just reads very immature. You can tell he’s super impulsive and super emotional.
In 2016, they were back together, spotted with her wearing her engagement ring. A few months later, they tied the knot in Las Vegas. However, local officials said the ceremony wasn’t legally binding, so there was no official record of the marriage, even though they tried. Despite this, and even though the county put out a statement on Twitter saying they didn’t get married, he tried to portray it that way. There was a moment on The Ellen DeGeneres Show where he confirmed he was a married man.

“In Vegas, at an Elvis, Viva Vegas wedding chapel, right? And part of the package, the King Tut package, you get a live stream for free. And I said, we don’t really need that. As a matter of fact, we’ll just take a private take. We had our moms there. They said, ‘No problem.’ We get back home, and it’s like, ‘Whoa, hey, something changed.’ So I called them. They, you know, someone pressed the wrong button that sent the video to TMZ. I said I understood, but at least now you’ve shared it. Most people share their wedding videos. Now you’ve shared it with everyone.”

Oh my gosh, it’s so touching! I’m already tearing up. I’m the type to cry at sweet TikTok videos of dogs, so this really gets to me. In 2022, Shia and Mia had their first baby. They were spotted pushing a stroller around Pasadena in early April, though they hadn’t publicly announced the birth. Rumors of Mia’s pregnancy had been floating around for months. In August, they confirmed their baby girl, Isabelle, was born. Shia wrote to his director friend Olivia Wilde, saying, “I have a little girl, Isabelle. She’s 5 months old and just starting to laugh. Honestly, I love the idea of taking your life, as it is, and if you’re not happy with it, crossing out the parts you don’t like and becoming someone new. It doesn’t have to be a huge change, but if there are things you want to improve, you can. She’s the most vibrant, magical person I know, a true game-changer. This all came at a time when my girlfriend and I had been in love for a long time, but I didn’t really understand what love was until everything went wrong, and she still stuck around. I used to think she loved me for what I could give her. I didn’t realize that even when I had nothing to offer, she would still love me. So, I didn’t really know what love was until now.
Now, seeing him trying to change his ways so his daughter doesn’t grow up with a father he doesn’t want to be is admirable. He said, “Having a daughter and knowing she will one day Google your name and see that you were a deplorable, disgusting person—that hits hard.” He wants to change his life’s path and has the chance to do so while acknowledging the people he’s hurt and that it’s not okay. Shia mentioned he’s trying to make a good impression on his daughter before she learns about his troubled past, saying, “I have until she’s old enough to read to build a relationship where she knows me better than the public’s image of me,” which is interesting. I hope she understands his true intentions. We also need to recognize that growing up in the industry, he had certain privileges, but it also came with its own set of challenges. He’s still growing up in many ways too.
