Let’s talk about why some people just can’t stand Chris Brown.
Back in 2013, Chris Brown got into some serious drama at a recording studio in Los Angeles. He reportedly had a physical fight with Frank Ocean and his crew over a parking spot. Frank told the police that when he told Chris he was in his parking spot, Chris allegedly punched him in the face. Things got even worse when two people from Chris’s entourage joined the fight. Frank also claimed that someone from Chris’s crew called him a gay slur, and Chris allegedly threatened to shoot him. Frank decided not to get medical treatment, and no charges were filed.
But the drama didn’t stop there. A few weeks later, at the Grammys, Chris was caught on camera refusing to give a standing ovation when Frank won the award for Best Urban Contemporary Album. He clapped, but stayed seated while everyone else stood. People watching at home noticed and were quick to call Chris out for being disrespectful and classless. Some even said he shouldn’t have been at the Grammys at all and should have been watching from home. A few months after all this, Chris checked into rehab.
October 2013 Incident with Chris
In October 2013, Chris found himself in serious trouble when he was arrested for hitting a man outside a Washington DC hotel. After being released, he went back to Los Angeles and checked into a rehab facility to work on his anger management issues. However, his stay was cut short after less than two weeks. During a family counseling session, his mom suggested that he should stay in treatment for a longer period. According to the LA Times, Chris was so enraged by this suggestion that he stormed outside and threw a rock through his mom’s car window. This violent behavior led to his immediate expulsion from the rehab center. Fans were shocked and many were deeply disappointed that he would act out so violently, especially against his own mother.

2016 Kailani Controversy
In 2016, Kailani posted a photo of herself in the hospital with an IV, amidst rumors that she had cheated on her then-boyfriend Kyrie Irving with PartyNextDoor. Kyrie later confirmed that these rumors were false. In her now-deleted post, Kailani expressed feelings of wanting to leave the Earth. Chris decided to share his opinion on the matter by tweeting that there was no such thing as attempting to take your own life and accused Kailani of seeking attention on social media to stop the negative comments she was receiving. He also expressed his support for Kyrie, calling him one of the few good guys left. This led to a significant backlash, with many people criticizing Chris for being insensitive and dismissive of mental health issues. He was also accused of misogyny for judging a woman based on infidelity rumors, especially given his own controversial past. Celebrities like Zendaya and Tinashe unfollowed him, and Kyrie publicly showed support for Kailani by sending love to her and her family. In the end, Chris faced intense criticism for involving himself in the situation and making hurtful comments.
In 2019, Chris dropped his album “Indigo,” which includes the song “Need a Stack.” In the song, he sings, “Only want the black with the nice hair, the nice hair.” You’d think he would have realized the backlash such lyrics might cause. Didn’t he consider the implications? Did no one in his circle warn him that this might upset people? Apparently not. Fans and critics alike were quick to react, questioning what Chris meant by “nice hair.” Was he implying that women with 4C hair didn’t stand a chance with him? When someone reposted the lyrics on Instagram, Chris brushed off the criticism, saying everyone was overreacting. He argued that if women can have standards, why can’t men express their preferences too? He added that only “the Uglies” were upset, not the black queens.
Back in 2017, Chris shared a video featuring his family’s new illegal pet, a baby monkey, cuddling with his daughter Royalty in a blanket. While Chris thought it was cute, many of his fans didn’t. They pointed out the dangers of owning a wild animal, especially around children, due to their unpredictability and the diseases they might carry. Animal rights groups blasted Chris, calling him irresponsible and claiming he couldn’t provide the warm, tropical climate the monkey needed. Despite the criticism, Chris continued to care for the animal. However, PETA launched an investigation and presented their findings to the authorities. It turned out Chris had bought the monkey illegally from an exotic animal breeder named Jim “the Monkey Whisperer” Hammonds for over $12,600, without the necessary permits. Hammonds was arrested, sentenced to five years of probation, and fined $90,000. Chris was ordered to give up the pet in 2022 and pay $35,000 for the monkey’s relocation. A judge also ruled that Chris could never see the monkey again without permission, according to the Associated Press.

In 2014, Chris caused a stir on social media when he tweeted that the Ebola virus was a form of population control. As expected, users quickly tore into him, with one calling him rich and ignorant. Charity workers were furious, too. According to the Toronto Sun, they accused Chris of being thoughtless and urged him to think before tweeting. A Red Cross spokesperson even said that Chris’s reckless words were endangering lives and suggested that he should donate to the cause instead of spreading nonsense. Despite the backlash, Chris was unfazed. He tweeted back, saying he would speak his mind no matter what, and dismissed his critics in a rather crude way.
Chris’s troubles don’t stop there. In February 2009, he physically assaulted Rihanna, leaving her with visible injuries that shocked the world. Chris admitted to The Guardian that seeing the photos made him feel like a monster. Although he and Rihanna briefly rekindled their romance, his issues continued. In 2017, his ex-girlfriend Karrueche Tran was granted a five-year restraining order against him, citing multiple incidents of physical abuse and threats. The following year, another woman received a temporary restraining order after accusing Chris of stalking and harassment. Despite these serious allegations and convictions, some people in the industry still support him, though many others have called for his cancellation.
So, what do you think of Chris today? Personally, I’m proud of him. I think people often forget that artists and entertainers are human beings who face their own struggles. Given everything he’s been through, I believe he’s made significant progress.
After recording “How Does It Feel” for her debut solo album, Chloe Bailey faced a wave of criticism. Keeley Williams voiced her disapproval on Twitter, saying Chris Brown should make his own records instead of relying on the talent of Black women he has hurt. She also called out Black women for continuously giving him passes. In response, Chris mocked Keeley for her lisp and posted on Instagram, expressing frustration with people hating on him and bringing up his past. He pointed out that others with domestic issues, like Blueface and Christian Rock, didn’t receive the same treatment, noting that people tuned in weekly to watch their conflicts. This only reinforced perceptions of his problematic behavior.
On May 5th, 2023, Chris celebrated his 34th birthday with a skate party in Las Vegas, hosted by Usher. The event, meant to be joyous, reportedly turned dramatic. According to a source from Hollywood Unlocked, Chris, allegedly under the influence, became loud and disrespectful towards Tiana Taylor. Several people, including Usher, tried to calm him down. Chris didn’t appreciate the intervention and allegedly called Usher a coward. TMZ reported that Chris cursed at Usher and Tiana but directed most of his anger at Usher. As Chris and his crew were leaving, Usher followed them, and they ended up behind a line of charter buses. When they re-emerged, Usher had a nose injury. This incident led many online users to say Chris had finally crossed the line, calling for his cancellation despite his musical contributions. However, Usher later posted a video showing no visible injuries, leaving people to question whether the altercation really happened or if it was just fake news.
Chris and Usher performed at the Lovers and Friends Festival the next day. Usher later posted on Instagram, thanking his celebrity friends for joining him on stage, but noticeably left out Chris. Neither Chris, Usher, nor Tiana has addressed the rumored altercation.
Most fans were ready to move on until a video surfaced showing Chris involved in another backstage incident at the festival. Chris responded, explaining that security was trying to clear the area, things got chaotic, and he stepped in to protect his child. He insisted that any other stories are false narratives.
It’s hard to know what to believe, but with 2023 not even halfway over, some people are calling for an end to Chris’s career. What do you think? Is Chris Brown being treated unfairly, or does he deserve the backlash? Let us know in the comments
