Recently, Lizzo became visibly upset during an Instagram Live session, expressing her distress over comments regarding her body size and derogatory remarks labeling her as a “mammy.” For those unfamiliar, “mammy” is a historically derogatory term used to stereotype overweight Black women as caretakers and domestic workers for white families, often depicted as unattractive and undesirable.
The trigger for these hurtful comments seems to have been the release of Lizzo’s new music video for “Rumors,” featuring Cardi B, where some viewers unjustly labeled her with this offensive term. It’s disheartening to see such outdated language persisting in modern discourse. Lizzo, however, defies this stereotype entirely. Despite this, her plus-size stature seems to have been the sole reason for these hurtful remarks, which understandably upset her.
Lizzo took to TikTok to address the issue, calling out those who labeled her as a mammy as both colorist and fatphobic. She emphasized the contradiction in criticizing her for supposedly embodying a desexualized stereotype while also objecting to her expressions of sexuality. She expressed her belief that some people are simply uncomfortable seeing a joyful, plus-size Black woman thriving in the pop music scene.
Drawing inspiration from iconic artists like Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, and Beyoncé, who faced their own share of criticism and adversity, Lizzo remains steadfast in her commitment to creating music that resonates with herself and the world. She refuses to be swayed by the negativity, knowing that her true audience is herself, and her music serves as a beacon of empowerment for others.
Lizzo initially tried to brush off the criticism she faced, but eventually, the negative comments got to her, leading her to break down in tears during an Instagram Live session.
She expressed her frustration, stating that despite spreading love and positivity, she still encountered hurtful remarks. Lizzo acknowledged that not everyone may enjoy her music or her latest song, “Rumors,” but she highlighted that many criticisms targeted her appearance rather than her artistic abilities or character. She passionately defended herself against such shallow judgments, particularly those aimed at her body, emphasizing that the incessant negativity disproportionately targets black women, especially those who, like her, don’t conform to society’s narrow standards.
These emotional remarks from Lizzo sparked discussions online, with some questioning the authenticity of her tears, suggesting they were a publicity stunt for her new single. While Lizzo has cultivated an image of confidence and resilience, she undeniably struggles with insecurities, particularly regarding comments about her body. Despite her outward demeanor, the hurtful remarks, especially those likening her to a mammy stereotype, deeply affected her.
Furthermore, there’s a broader issue at play here: the limited representation of black women in mainstream media and entertainment. Lizzo’s unapologetic embrace of her body challenges conventional beauty standards, which some find uncomfortable. However, it’s crucial to recognize that Lizzo represents herself, not an entire demographic. Attempts to pigeonhole her into a single image overlook the diversity within the black female community.
Shifting focus, the rapper Future found himself embroiled in controversy after disrespectful behavior towards one of his ex-partners, Brittni Mealy, surfaced online. This led to a messy social media exchange between Brittni and Future, but to understand the context, it’s essential to delve into their relationship history.
Future and Brittni have had an on-again, off-again relationship spanning years. Reports suggest they’ve been involved since 2009 and share an eight-year-old son. Their history together spans over a decade.
However, their relationship is complicated. Throughout their time together, Future was involved with several other women, fathering children with them. Despite knowing Future’s tendencies, Brittni continued their relationship, drawn in by the lifestyle he provided and perhaps addicted to the toxic dynamic. Among Future’s various partners, Brittni was the enduring one, often waiting on the sidelines, ready to reconcile whenever he showed interest. Rumors swirled that he continued seeing Brittni even during his other relationships, such as with Ciara.
Their reconciliation after Future’s split with Ciara raised eyebrows, especially since Ciara had attempted to be friendly with Brittni and Future’s other exes. Despite Brittni’s intermittent outbursts, she consistently took Future back, even when he was involved with other women like Joy Chavez and Lori Harvey. Brittni seemed to harbor hopes of being chosen by Future, but she ultimately realized she couldn’t change his behavior. His infidelity, numerous children, and constant emotional turmoil became too much to bear, leading Brittni to finally end the relationship.

In December of last year, Brittni publicly called out Future for his neglectful behavior as a father and his disrespect towards her in front of their children. Expressing her frustration, she said, “I don’t usually do this, but Future, you’re acting cowardly. You knew to hide and run when I arrived because you’re afraid of confrontation, you coward. You fled from my children. Running away like you always do, coward. Who in their right mind tells an eight-year-old such vile things and threatens his own mother? You’re a disgrace. Don’t come crawling back like you always do, weakling. Because after tonight, you mean nothing to me, [expletive]. That’s all you are, [expletive]. Why are you even touching me? I’m not touching you. Stop, please. Everyone, witness how he makes his son feel.” Brittni’s emotions were clearly intense in the video, driven by Future’s disrespectful behavior and threats towards her and their child.
While I believe that arguing in front of children is unhealthy, I can empathize with Brittni’s reaction given the circumstances. Future’s actions consistently provoke her. Just last week, Brittni exposed Future once again by sharing a text message he sent to their son. In the message, he instructed the child to relay a message to Brittni about buying him clothes, and when the son asked what to tell his mom, Future replied with derogatory language about Brittni. In her caption, Brittni condemned Future’s actions, stating, “Sending such messages to a child shows your true cowardice. He’s only eight years old, you fool.”
Now, Future made a huge mistake by sending that text to his child. Regardless of his relationship with Brittni, there’s no excuse for disrespecting her in front of their son. It’s simply not acceptable; it’s terrible parenting and sets a terrible example. Calling his son’s mother names is just plain wrong. However, I can’t say Brittni is completely innocent either. Publicly blasting Future on social media isn’t setting a good example either. But let’s look at the bigger picture here. Future is the one being petty and disrespectful, provoking Brittni. So, it’s no wonder she’s reacting the way she is. Future’s behavior is the root cause of this mess, and it’s truly disappointing.
Brittni also shared this on her IG story: “Absolutely no lies here. Why would I fabricate anything for you? You specifically confirmed it was your number and his. So, if you’re not ready for these recordings to surface, better keep quiet. Swear on my life, you admitted it. You deserve to be called out. Treating children like that is unacceptable. It’s been three months since you last saw him, yet you’re still in the same area. I could continue. Today, I even had to return his school clothes. So petty. Just because someone wants to co-parent without being sexually involved with you. I’ve been patient and kind for so long, but I’ve reached my limit. I won’t tolerate anything when it comes to my children. I’m a mother first and foremost, always standing up for my kids.”
Brittni dropped an intriguing bombshell recently. She disclosed that Future’s been giving her the cold shoulder because their intimate connection has fizzled out. Frankly, this revelation doesn’t shock me. It’s textbook Future behavior when a woman decides to part ways romantically. Just look at how he handled things with Ciara. His response was all shades of petty, especially when she found happiness with Russell Wilson. And let’s not forget his antics with Lori Harvey after their split, throwing shade at her and her new flame, Michael B. Jordan. When Future can’t have things his way and sneak back into the bedroom, he throws a tantrum. There’s a clear pattern here, and it seems the rift between Future and Brittni stems from their severed intimate ties. It’s disheartening, especially considering Future hasn’t seen their son in three months, despite living in the same vicinity. There’s really no excuse for that level of neglect.
Recently, Future took to Twitter to address a statement made by Brittni, simply saying, “Pray for her.” Following suit, Future’s mother joined the conversation, expressing her thoughts: “It’s disheartening to witness individuals resorting to social media for attention when things don’t go their way. No matter how much one may give, it never seems to suffice. We truly need to foster self-love, as projecting one’s frustrations onto others only perpetuates the cycle of negativity.”
Clearly, Future’s mother’s comment was aimed at Brittni. In response, Brittni didn’t hold back, firing back at both Future and his mother. She retorted, “Ma’am, please refrain from speaking. Your role in his upbringing was minimal at best. It’s hypocritical to publicly support him while privately acknowledging his wrongdoings to your grandson. This man’s behavior is a reflection of your household. Like mother, like son. You’re out of touch with reality. Stop meddling in the affairs of a nearly 40-year-old man. Your preachings about self-love ring hollow. He lacks it because of you, treating women poorly and unable to maintain relationships with 11 or 12 children from different mothers. He’s a true narcissist, yet you preach about self-love? Spare me. When individuals can’t fulfill their desires or evade their responsibilities, they resort to manipulating their children and inflicting emotional harm. I’m finished with this. It’s beneath me.”
As evident from Brittni’s perspective, she expressed a significant amount of frustration, and it seems justified considering the circumstances. She’s particularly irked by Future’s apparent pettiness towards her, with his mother publicly siding with him, which only serves to undermine her. Moreover, Future’s pettiness didn’t cease, as Brittni alleged that he even attempted to have her Instagram business page removed. Consequently, her page was temporarily deactivated. In retaliation, Brittni decided to reciprocate the pettiness by revealing an audio clip where Future admitted to not loving his other baby mama, Joy Chavis.

Rather, her aim was to warn Future to cease his petty actions, emphasizing a desire for peace and to be left alone.
So Brittni decided to abandon the high road and match Future’s pettiness. I find it rather petty of her to release that audio and involve Joy. Joy, being unproblematic and minding her own business, shouldn’t have been dragged into this mess. Releasing the audio seems unnecessary, only highlighting Brittni’s discomfort with Future’s relationship with Joy. Let’s be clear, Future doesn’t truly love any of these women. His actions speak louder than words. If he told Brittni he didn’t love Joy, he probably said the same about Brittni to his other baby mamas. Brittni wasted years on Future, but she’s finally moved on. Let’s hope things don’t escalate like this again, as they have to co-parent, and constant attacks don’t benefit their son.
