We all know Aries Spears for his spot-on celebrity impersonations and his time on Mad TV. He’s also had a recurring role in A Different World and appeared in Jerry Maguire. Recently, he’s made headlines due to allegations against him and fellow comedian Tiffany Haddish.
Haddish says she deeply regrets participating in a comedy sketch that’s led to a lawsuit against her and Aries Spears. The controversy centers around the involvement of children in the sketch and issues of consent.

In 1997, Aries joined the cast of Mad TV. Around 1998, he and Shalane Turner welcomed a baby girl named Jazz. Details about their relationship are unclear, but by 2003, Aries was seen on the red carpet with a woman named Frankie Rivera. That relationship didn’t last either, and eventually, Aries met Elisa Laregi, a mother of two. They started living together, but things began to fall apart around 2008. According to court documents, Elisa reported that Aries lost his temper with her three-year-old daughter, allegedly causing a popped blood vessel in her eye. She described a history of physical and verbal abuse, but despite this, they stayed together, and Elisa gave birth to their son, Jordan, in December 2009. Less than a month later, they allegedly had a physical altercation, leading to Aries’ arrest on a domestic charge. They continued their relationship and got married in December 2010.
The next few years were difficult, with Elisa describing their living situation as a nightmare that endangered her and her children. By February 2013, Elisa had enough. She filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences, and days later, she filed a restraining order against Aries after he allegedly threatened her with a baseball bat. She sought full custody of their three-year-old son, and Aries agreed to give up custody in March 2013, also agreeing to stay 100 yards away from Elisa. Elisa moved back to Florida with her children. Although she was earning just over $1,300 per month, Aries, who had left Mad TV in 2005, was making nearly $50,000 per month. The court ordered him to cover her expenses, including buying her a home in Coral Springs, Florida, costing between $300,000 and $375,000, giving her $7,000 for moving expenses, buying her a 2014 Cadillac Escalade worth $60,000 to $75,000, and paying $5,000 per month in child support. Aries also secured a $1 million life insurance policy with his children as beneficiaries.
But here’s where things get messy. Their divorce was finalized in May 2014, and just a month later, Elisa gave birth to their daughter, Jada. So, while the media was buzzing about their divorce settlement, Aries and Elisa were still trying to work through their issues. According to court documents, Elisa stated that one day, while they were discussing their problems on the second floor of their home, Aries became extremely emotional and threatened to end his life. He allegedly reached for a weapon, and it discharged.
Thankfully, the bullet hit the floor, striking only a cabinet and a water pipe on the first floor. Elisa claimed Aries convinced her he had changed, and they remarried in May 2015. Elisa shared their wedding photo on Facebook, but RRG noticed that none of her friends or family congratulated the couple in the comments.
However, their relationship continued to decline. Elisa claimed Aries began monitoring her every move. In her court documents, she wrote that Aries, “checks the camera remotely and then becomes paranoid, delusional, and aggressive in demanding to know where I was.” In August 2016, they separated, and Elisa filed for divorce again.
By this point, Aries was earning close to $1 million per year, while Elisa was unemployed. In court documents, Elisa stated that Aries cut her off financially after their separation and allegedly told her he wouldn’t give her any money unless she engaged in intimate activities. She also submitted screenshots of text messages from Aries, where he threatened to sell the house she was living in and the vehicle she was using. Elisa responded by telling him to come by the house at 11 PM and bring contraceptives. During their separation, Elisa claimed Aries’ eldest daughter’s mother, Shalane, moved in. Shalane stayed in the home until Aries told her to leave around May 2018. Court documents alleged that Shalane gets upset and acts out whenever Aries chooses to be with Elisa.
In October 2017, Elisa took legal action by filing a restraining order against Shalane, identifying her as Aries’ mistress in the court papers. Elisa recounted years of alleged harassment by Shalane, even citing a disturbing incident from 2012 where she claims Shalane attacked her with a crowbar. The court granted Elisa’s request for the restraining order, and both women agreed to steer clear of each other after Shalane also requested protection from Elisa.
Fast forward to June 2018, Elisa and Aries decided to give their relationship another shot. But when Elisa returned to their shared home, she was shocked to find what she described as sinister threats scrawled on the walls, which she attributed to Shalane. Elisa documented these threats with chilling photographs. Meanwhile, tensions between Elisa and Aries reached new heights. While Aries was away, he allegedly monitored Elisa’s every move using outdoor cameras. Elisa claimed she endured constant verbal abuse and threats from Aries, who would fly into a rage and bombard her with angry texts if she didn’t answer his calls promptly.
By November 2018, the couple’s attempts to reconcile had failed once again. Shortly thereafter, Elisa sought yet another restraining order against Shalane. Elisa alleged that Aries reacted to news of the restraining order by making physical threats against her. This prompted Elisa to file a restraining order against Aries, not just for herself but also for their two children and her 14-year-old daughter from a previous relationship. In court documents, Elisa painted a picture of Aries’ erratic behavior, claiming he indulged in daily marijuana and alcohol consumption. She presented a plethora of evidence to support her claims, including bullet holes and fist marks on the walls, knuckle imprints on the fridge, a shattered champagne bottle, photographs of her bruises, and still images captured by their home surveillance system showing confrontations between her and Aries.
Aries was slapped with a hefty monthly child support bill of nearly $10,000, while Elisa received a divorce settlement close to $140,000, paid out in monthly chunks. Making headlines in 2020, Aries co-hosted the Adult Video News Awards, stepping onto the red carpet with none other than Shalane.
But the plot thickened in August 2022. Just days after publicly poking fun at Lizzo on a podcast, comparing her to the poop emoji, Aries and Tiffany Haddish found themselves embroiled in serious allegations. A woman and her younger brother accused them of grooming and coercing them into filming inappropriate comedy skits during their youth.
Taking to Instagram, Tiffany shared, “I know there are a lot of questions swirling around. Believe me, I’m just as curious as you are. However, due to the legal proceedings underway, I’m limited in what I can say. But let me be clear, while the intention behind the sketch was humor, it clearly missed the mark, and I deeply regret being a part of it.” A statement from Aries’ legal team firmly stated that their client “won’t be swayed by any attempts at extortion.”
