Hey everyone! Welcome. Recently, Remy Ma caught up with Fat Joe on Instagram Live and delved into her notorious diss track aimed at Nicki Minaj, dubbed “Sheether.” Who can forget the firestorm “Sheether” stirred up back in 2017? Remy unleashed it against Nicki, alleging that behind the scenes, Nicki was working to sabotage her. It was all those hidden maneuvers, you know? From attempts to keep her off red carpets, thwart her award wins, or tarnish her album sales—anything to diminish Remy’s shine and boost Nicki’s image. Remy wasn’t having it, especially when it came to providing for her children.

Before their feud ignited, Remy and Nicki actually had a decent rapport. They were pretty chummy. But somewhere along the line, that friendship turned into rivalry and eventually morphed into full-blown enmity.
“What was the breaking point? I mean, seriously, what was it? I know we were on good terms while you were in jail. We were exchanging letters and all, which is not something we usually do. So, shout out to Brian Free Ranch for breaking the norm. But right before I left, you know, I was doing my own thing and then she dropped this unexpected freestyle, kind of aimed at me. So, I showed up at her mixtape release, took her aside, and spent a whole round asking, ‘Why would you do that? You don’t need to.’ I even mentioned how I’ve been into life coaching lately, emphasizing that talented people like us don’t have to resort to that kind of stuff. Honestly, you get much farther by being real instead of trying to come at me like that.”

After that, it was like, everyone showed up to my birthday party, she mingled with our crowd, and then things took a turn. I ended up getting locked up. Surprisingly, we had parted on good terms. And upon my return, she reached out, we talked it out. We had a lengthy conversation. If I were to show you the text messages we exchanged during that time, you wouldn’t even believe things went sour. I could have easily used those messages to escalate the situation, but I’m just not that type of person. If we were ever cool, if we were friends, and you confided in me, even after we stopped talking, I wouldn’t spill your secrets or fabricate stories about you. The same goes for what you confided in me when we were on good terms; I wouldn’t betray that trust. So, what was the breaking point, you ask? Well, it was when someone very credible, someone we all know, showed me messages from her talking negatively about me, essentially wishing for my downfall. I can’t reveal who showed me those messages because it would lead back to them, but I was shocked. Whenever someone approached me with similar claims before, I brushed them off, thinking they were just trying to stir up drama. But seeing it firsthand was a wake-up call. How could she wish ill upon me when I’ve been through so much? I’m just trying to make things right, trying to get back on track. I’m not even in the same league as her; she’s off making moves, while I’m still trying to find my footing. I wanted us to get along, to support each other. I didn’t want things to turn sour, you know? But sometimes, you realize too late that some people aren’t on your side. Just like in the case of the tip, Terror Squad, DNASE, you don’t inform me until it’s too late, knowing Joe would have intervened. So, you go ahead and do it anyway, thinking, “Oh, I know that call’s coming,” and then I reach out to you.

I found it intriguing when Remy mentioned seeing messages allegedly from Nicki speaking negatively about her. It raises questions about the content of those messages. Did they align with Remy’s previous claims of Nicki attempting to sabotage her career, or were they simply derogatory remarks? I’m curious about the specifics of the messages and who brought them to Remy’s attention. This inquiry arises because the narrative appears somewhat inconsistent. However, I’m not implying that Remy is being dishonest; there could be truth to her statements. Yet, I question whether the situation warranted Remy releasing a diss track against Nicki. Upon reflection, I believe such a public confrontation may have been avoidable through private discussion. Regrettably, that avenue wasn’t pursued. Furthermore, it seems likely that Remy had additional motivations for dropping “Shether,” as hinted during her interview with Hollywood Unlocked.

“It felt like the final straw, the one that snapped the camel’s back. I was already frustrated with everything happening around me. I thought, ‘This isn’t conducive to success, not just for me, but for anyone. If you don’t fit a certain mold, if you don’t conform, if you’re not subservient, then we’re never going to make it. Enough is enough. I’m drawing a line now. What are we even doing?’ Sometimes I get carried away when I express myself, maybe I went too far, but that’s how I felt. It wasn’t like I was trying to be some tough guy, it was just about the music. It was more like, ‘Just let me be. Don’t mess with me like this.'”

So, the story goes beyond just Remy taking shots at Nicki because of rumored backstage antics. It’s also about Nicki’s dominance in the rap game. She was at the peak, unrivaled by other female rappers who couldn’t match her stature. Plus, challenging her seemed career-damaging. However, by 2017, Nicki’s grip on the industry was slipping, prompting some insiders to seek her replacement. They hoped for a new star to outshine her. Remy’s diss against Nicki carried weight because it aligned with the desires of certain industry figures longing for a successor to dethrone Nicki and bring in a fresh face.

Remy unwittingly found herself entangled as a pawn in the unfolding events. “Sheether” inadvertently paved the way for Cardi B’s emergence, initially earning Remy’s enthusiastic support. Behind the scenes, Remy championed Cardi B, spreading positive word about her. Notably, Remy even invited Cardi B onstage during her set at Summer Jam, a significant boost for the rising artist. It’s commendable that Remy leveraged her spotlight to uplift other female rappers. However, her unwavering support didn’t always yield mutual support in return—a realization that dawned on her later. This lack of reciprocation likely left her feeling unsettled, a sentiment she candidly shared during an Instagram live session with Fat Joe.

“Some people even speculated that she was subtly criticizing Cardi B, but honestly, I think she was just expressing frustration. The thing is, you know how it goes, in this chaotic world where acknowledgment is often scarce. I feel like, regardless of the drama surrounding ‘Sheether,’ it paved the way, you know, opened doors for all the female artists you see flourishing today. I genuinely believe that. It’s like you unlocked opportunities, even with the significant gesture of bringing Cardi B into the spotlight earlier. Not every female artist got that chance before Cardi B, being on such a grand stage. I’m sure she’s grateful for that. It was a pivotal moment that broadened the horizons for all female artists.”

“Yeah, but in Nicki’s defense, you know, it’s true that sometimes people fail to see what she really is. There are times when certain individuals, particularly men, seem to overshadow others. I mean, seriously, there’s enough space for everyone to shine. Why not support each other instead of competing like that? I just can’t wrap my head around their thought process or logic. When you do manage to rise to the top, it’s like everyone around you is telling you to keep it to yourself, to not share your spotlight with anyone else. But despite that pressure, I often find myself going out of my way for others, even if they wouldn’t necessarily do the same for me. Is it naive? Maybe. But sometimes, I think it’s the right thing to do. Because no matter what challenges come my way, I always seem to come out on top.”

One intriguing aspect of this dialogue is Remy’s assertion that by dropping “Sheether,” she paved the way for other female rappers to emerge. However, I believe Remy might be overestimating the impact of “Sheether.” It didn’t so much open doors as it created a diversion. While the spotlight was on Nicki Minaj and Remy’s feud, Cardi B managed to navigate her path to success stealthily, catching many off guard. Cardi’s rise did indeed encourage record labels to invest more in female rap artists, reflecting the profit-driven nature of the industry. Consequently, we’re witnessing a surge in female talent now. These are my perspectives on the matter. I’d love to hear your thoughts on Remy’s comments in the comments section below.
